No one was sleeping at this year’s Kentucky Derby Festival Great Bed Race on April 29th! This year 41 teams participated in the bed race at Broadbent Arena and thousands came to watch the fun.

First held in 1990 on the streets of downtown Louisville in Theatre Square, the Great Bed Race is now in its 30th year. This Kentucky Derby Festival event continues to attract participants from local small businesses and larger corporations and attracts spectators who enjoy watching the race and participating in the festivities.

This year the Neil Huffman Automotive Group team decided to make their own bed to race in the big event. Not surprising, our bed looked a lot like a Volkswagen Beetle – fuzzy dice and all!

For the event, each team was tasked with building a wheeled bed that they pushed during the competitive 600-foot racing course. To add extra fun, the teams showed off their costumes and handmade beds in a parade before the race.

Matt Gibson, Kentucky Derby Festival senior vice president of events, waved the starting flag. This was Gibson’s 21st year starting the bed races.

This year’s top teams included the Zeon team, for the most decorated bed award; Rubbies Southside Bar & Grille’s “Pigasus Power,” which won the award for the most entertaining bed; and the Bigelow Teas team, which won the “cone eater” award which is given to the team that accidentally hit the most safety cones during the race.

Bed Race Starting Line

We enjoy being a part of the Louisville community, and building our racing bed for the Kentucky Derby festivities was not only a fun event for our community, but it was also a great team building experience.

According to Kim Huffman, Managing Partner, “The Neil Huffman Auto Group is proud to be a participant in the annual KY Derby Festival Great Bed Race event — it’s an opportunity to showcase our true Team Huffman spirit! With team members from across our automotive group, we were able to come together and, literally, build on last year’s bed race success. We were also happy to incorporate a piece of our company’s history into the design of the bed… it’s a tribute to my dad’s (the late Neil Huffman) favorite car – a yellow Volkswagen Beetle.”

The Neil Huffman Automotive Group is proud to support multiple local organizations. Just like we take pride in our local dealerships, we take pride in our involvement with our local communities we serve. Feel free to check out some of the remarkable groups and organizations that we’ve supported throughout the years.
